What is an AI voice-clone grandparent scam?
It is the old "grandparent scam" with a new tool. A scammer copies a grandchild's voice from a short video or voicemail found online, then calls a grandparent sounding scared: an accident, an arrest, a hospital bill, and please don't tell Mom and Dad. Then comes a demand for money, fast, often by gift card, wire, or cash handed to a courier. The FTC has warned families about exactly this. The fix is simple: hang up and call the family member back at the number you already have.

Why it works
- The voice sounds right, so the grandparent's heart takes over before their head does.
- The caller adds pressure ("they'll only hold me an hour") and secrecy ("don't tell anyone").
- A second voice often joins, playing a "lawyer" or "officer" to make it feel official.
What your parent should do
- 1Hang up. Being polite is not required.
- 2Call the grandchild directly, or call you, at a number already in the phone.
- 3Ask for the family safe word, if your family has one.
- 4Never pay by gift card, wire, cryptocurrency, or cash handed to someone at the door. No real court, jail, or hospital asks for that.
Set it up before the call comes
Pick a family safe word, a word only your family knows, and teach it to everyone, grandparents first. The FBI recommends it. If a caller claiming to be family cannot give the word, it is not them.
