What happens if my parent falls and can't reach the phone?
She waits until someone notices, so it depends on what you set up beforehand. With nothing in place, that could be days. A pendant or a watch with fall detection is built to get help fast. A daily check-in only limits the wait to the deadline you pick. If she has fallen, call 911.

The goal: shorten the wait
The fall is only part of the problem. The other part is how long she is alone before anyone knows. That is why the National Institute on Aging advises older adults to keep a well-charged phone with them at all times and arrange daily contact with a family member or friend.
If your dad fell and lay on the floor all night, you already know why this matters.
How would I know if Mom fell? It depends on the setup

A plan for a fall
- Keep a charged phone on her, not across the room.
- The NYC Health Department suggests keeping phones on low shelves or tables she can reach from the floor.
- Decide who has a key, so help can get in.
- Fill in her emergency card, so whoever arrives knows her medicines and allergies.
- If she is hurt or cannot get up, call 911. NIA gives the same advice.
- Ask her doctor about fall prevention, and about a home safety check by an occupational therapist.
Where a check-in fits
A check-in is a backstop for the ordinary morning. It is not a fall tool.
